Nas:Taking The Bullet (An Op-ed)

Is Nas a leader of a rebellion or is he the soothsayer, helping the rest of the world see what he has seen since he started rapping? The media may try to make him look like the gangster rapper who will rob your house and have his way with your wife and daughter despite what his music catalogue suggests of his character. Like Tupac over ten years ago when rap was under fire, Nas is stepping up to take whatever will come out of this and like Tupac he is now deemed as a dangerous gangster rapper even though the music points at consequences, hope, and inspiration.

Nas: Taking The Bullet:

Most recently known for the criticism he received on “The O’ Reilly Factor” and for making an album called “Hip-Hop Is Dead“, Nas has been taking the public forum of all debate regarding rap music. Since the release of “Hip-Hop Is Dead”, Nas has been making his rounds making his presence felt. Performing at Virginia Tech despite what Bill O’Reilly wanted:

Nas is now making the finishing touches on his next album, “N****r”. Although Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are quick to criticize Nas for his choice of album title, Nas continues with it delaying the release for a good number of months to perfect one of the most anticipated albums of the year. Nas is public enemy #1 in the eyes of Fox News and when they were able to get Jesse Jackson and members of the NAACP to say that they disapprove of what Nas is doing, Nas only had one thing to say;
“I’m a street disciple,” Nas responded, quoting one of his earlier album titles. “I’m talking to the streets. Stay out of our business. You ain’t got no business worrying about what the word ‘nigger’ is or acting like you know what my album is about without talking to me. Whether you in the NAACP or you Jesse Jackson. I respect all of them … I just want them to know: Never fall victim to Fox. Never fall victim to the sh– they do. What they do is try to hurry up and get you on the phone and try to get you to talk about something you might not know about yet. “

“If Cornel West was making an album called Nigger, they would know he’s got something intellectual to say,” Nas continued. “To think I’m gonna say something that’s not intellectual is calling me a nigger, and to be called a nigger by Jesse Jackson and the NAACP is counterproductive, counter-revolutionary.”

No statements were received from Jesse Jackson after this quote. Nas has continued to publicize his album in interviews explaining how in the midst of everything that has happened he wants to take control. Nas had shined the light on hip-hop two years ago with his last album and now he is taking the spotlight and shining it on the rest of the world. Don Imus can be said to be the person who sparked all of the recent racial tensions and that can be agreed on but Nas says that it was win-win for Imus because it was handled badly and by that he means that everytime something like that happens Al Sharpton and the same old crowd are out marching about and that he should send him a new pair of gators since his are probably worn out from all the marching. With that statement alone I feel like Nas does have alot to say on his next album. He is getting frowned upon by so-called leaders of his own community for trying to take on one of the most sensitive subject matters in the world. In that last statement he says the old way doesn’t work anymore, marching is not a way to solve anything in modern society. Nas hopes to take his music, which has always had something to talk about in it, and set the bar where he thinks the discussion of the state of racism and the state of hip-hop should be. If you look back ten and more years ago the same discussions about mysogyny and violence in rap were happening and they are only being repeated now with no solution. Racism is exactly where it was ten years ago if not tracked back even further by the displays of nooses all over the country. Nas aims to take these topics and lay them out and say “work from here, follow the line, stay out of the circle”.

Nas took the reigns of hip-hop and helped reshape it to push away “ringtone” rappers in a battle that is still taking place, but with less ringtone rappers. Now Nas hopes to reshape racism and Middle-America’s views on rap music. To show the difference between a ringtone and a true work of hip-hop art. To bring forward what is really happening in racism, that it is still alive. It was only covered by a blanket left to smolder until it received the breath to rekindle itself.

Nas, a marketing strategy, a rebel, or a revolutionary. You can decide that on your own. Either way, Nas has stepped up the the pulpit, turning the volume up on the mic, and people are going to listen. Picking up exactly where Tupac left off in his battle against the media and rap. Say hello to the second coming of the bad guy.

Alright, so I was browsing through youtube and I came across one of their features that has to do with my topic for analytical research. It is the video collection of a debate style show that BET put on discussing the state of hip-hop music and how it affects society which was a major topic in America this year. I contacted the people who had the videos that were being featured and they said it would be great so I will also link to them at the end of the post. I thought the debate was pretty interesting when I caught parts of it on TV and I hope everyone else finds it interesting too, feel free to leave some response to them. I can’t tell you what the bonus is cause that would ruin the mystery of it. I’m not really a fan of the song ” I Know”, I guess it just wasn’t my favorite from AG. “Pop Like Me” was alright but it wasn’t on par with what I would expect from an Outlaw. The Pete Rock song is a good one, this is the dude that has produced classics, check out Illmatic.

This is a song about the Sean Bell tragedy where Sean Bell was killed by the police on his wedding day after the police let off 50 shots thinking that Sean Bell had a weapon when he didn’t. Mickey Factz takes on the persona of Sean Bell in this song with an eerie instrumental and a lyrical narrative of the events of what happened and the aftermath and contains audio from newscasts. I am also gonna post a video that tells you more about Mickey Factz so you can decide if he is someone you would want to add to your list or not.

To talk more on my analytical research I am doing a post about other types of music that most has been deemed fit for radio play and socially acceptable. Rap uses the same words and phrases and the culture is frowned upon. I compiled a quick set of videos that are more offensive or just as offensive as people view commercial rap. If you don’t think these are more offensive you probably have a backwards perspective on life. I included the famous song “Bitch” by Meredith Brooks because it is the perfect example of how it is wrong for rappers to say bitch but a woman can run around talking about how she is a bitch just because she is singing about it when it is counter-productive to do so. Women have been having fits all year about the Imus situation and rappers saying bitch but when that song came out it was empowering to women and many claimed to be bitches themselves and said it was a term of empowerment against mysogyny in society. There is also songs that portray women negatively but according to the news women are forced into making themselves look bad in rap videos and they don’t ask to be in them and ask to wear next to nothing. This post isn’t just fixed on the topic of women but that is one of the main issues that was facing rap this year along with the use of the n-word and that the music was too vulgar which there are also songs that cover that. That was my brief description

Analytical Research: Rap v. Society

I am writing a paper about the recent events from the beginning of the Jena 6 up to the hanging of a noose around the neck of the statue of Tupac Shakur. This not only includes the incidents of racism but also the media’s sudden want to clean up rap music after Don Imus said “nappy-headed ho”, which led to a congressional hearing over the state of rap music. I talk about how when something bad happens in society it gets reflected upon the rap community as if the source of all problems comes from there. I am using Tupac as a recurring figure in my paper.

In the 90′s Tupac dealt firsthand with issues of racism and was placed as the leader of gangsta rap and media attention was placed on him when things went wrong in society. He was blamed for a teen shooting a police officer in Texas who allegedly said that he was listening to Tupac and the music made him do it. Tupac was also under the magnifying glass for his use of the words bitch and ho and again it was made to look like it was all of his fault.

More than ten years later we are still having the same argument about the use of the word bitch among others. Rap still takes the fall for the use of swearing and for violence, especially in schools. Rap has been analyzed for the “stop snitchin’” movement and for the words used especially bitch and the n-word.
Bill O’Reilly went on his show and tried to make people prevent rapper Nas from performing at a Virginia Tech benefit concert claiming that Nas was a gangsta rapper and that he only had violent lyrics and he even had letters from kids at the school who said they didn’t want him there but when Nas performed and ended his set by saying “this is for Bill O’Reilly” and then performing “Hate Me Now” the crowd loved it.
So to end this brief description of the paper
I’m analyzing whether rap music gets stones cast on it all day or whether it really is such a negative force in society that the news and polticians make it out to be.
